Girls Under 12 Result: Mooncoin 3 Cappoquin Railway 2

The girls finally got the result that their hard work and talent deserves. An early morning pitch inspection saw that the match went ahead in muddy but dry conditions. Noel Lavery did an excellent job, as usual, refereeing the game. He encouraged and helped the girls on both teams throughout.

The story of the first half was dominated by the Dobbyns; Hannah in goal and Ella up front. Hannah blocked everything that came her way and Ella scored an outstanding solo goal to give Mooncoin a deserved lead. Lucy Cuddihy was also outstanding up front and was unlucky not to get on the score sheet. The Cappoquin goalkeeper was very tall and almost had to duck to avoid hitting her head off the crossbar.

Our defense was resolute with Kayla showing why she is on the Waterford development squad, and Sadhbh and Grace clearing ball after ball. Grace managed to repeatedly win balls that weren’t even close to 50-50. Stephanie replaced Sadhbh after 20 minutes and Saoirse Drennan came on at half time; it is hard to belive that Stephanie and Saoirse played a camogie blitz before this game. Where do they get their energy?

Cappoquin pulled one back in the second half, but this seemed to spur Mooncoin on to even greater efforts. Saoirse Corcoran covered every blade of grass and Aoibhe Rees finally got the goal that she so richly deserved. On another day Aoibhe could have had 2 or 3 more. Aoibhinn O’Donnell replaced Hannah in goal and pulled off a number of great saves. Eventually though, Cappoquin pulled back a second goal and the worry was that we would not get the three points that we deserved.

In the end it was Saoirse Corcoran who popped up to put away an excellent pass from Aoibhe to give us the lead which we would not relinquish. Cappoquin had an excellent player in the middle of the field who, it turns out, plays inter-county camogie for the Waterford u14 team. Sophie Scahill tracked her from one end of the pitch. It really was a thing of beauty to see Sophie, Sadhbh, Saoirse Corcoran, Saoirse Drennan and others tackle this girl who was physically so much taller than them.

This was a great win for a great group of girls. Dee and Padraig.

4th division result: Johnville 2 Mooncoin Celtic 1

Best performance of the season do far by this young squad. The lads flew out of the blocks and could have been a few up with plenty chances missed. Ian Synnott scored after 15 mins and chance after chance came along after that but still no second goal. Chucky Norris had a goal disallowed direct from a corner much to everyone’s dismay and Neville Synnott rattled the bar. Johnville scored with 10 mins left to make it 1-1, a Johnny McGrath foul resulted in a late penalty for Johnville to make it 2-1. A sickening finish after a great performance.
Best players on the day were chucky, blackie, Johnathan Power and the youthful Mick Dwyer.

U13 Result: Mooncoin Celtic 5 Piltown B 0

Piltown came to visit this Saturday morning in breezy conditions. This was second game on the trot that we dominated from start to finish. The defence was rock soild throughout and our patient buildup play soon paid off. Robbie Doherty scored the opener from close range. Jamie Croke got a birthday goal after great work from Robbie. 2-0 at the break. We kept our foot on the pedal in the second half and a great shot from Robbie gave him his second. A thunder bolt from Canice Kinsella put the game well and truly beyond Piltown. The icing on the cake was an Emily Blackmore debut goal after she picked the full backs pocket and calmly shot home. Final score 5.0.
Fantastic squad performance from all 16 that took the field.
Man of the match Aidan Carroll , he covered every blade of grass on the pitch with a dominant display

U10 Purple Girls

While games were falling by the wayside this morning our U10 Purple Girls put in a fantastic show in picturesque Faithlegg against Park Rangers in damp conditions. Goals galore by both sides and some very happy kids and coaches afterwards.

Amazing to see the difference a year makes with this group of girls who along with the Pink Squad are getting maximum game time and it is certainly paying off.

WSFL Under 15C League Bohemians 0 vs Mooncoin Celtic 5

Super performance from the team today at Ben Wadding Park. A performance that was in the making. We started out very strong and took the game to Bohs. Lee Freyne carrying a knee injury was instrumental in the number 10 role today which was new for him but he played a part in our opener which was put away by Sam Hartwell. The game remained close and Bohs had some chances one in particular which drew a fantastic save by Jonah O’Toole. 1-0 at half time., The second half was completely ours and early on we added a second from Sam Hartwell who was played in by a training ground thru ball from Diego Blanco Ibañez. Sam used his fierce to tally up his hat trick which capped off another fine performance. Adam Conway was frustrated not to score after making some great runs through the defence as was Sean Lennon who was an absolute nightmare to handle on the left. Sean was very unlucky not to score after weaving in and out through at least 7 players. Dylan Conway was involved in your first goal and was unlucky not to score. Lee Freyne scores our fourth. Mikey Cronin came on and was involved in everything. A great performance by Mikey capped off with an absolute screamer of a goal to make it 5-0. Alex Bailey was put at Centre back today away from his favored midfield role but when you need a man to do a job Alex is the man. He broke down absolutely every Bohs attack. He was flanked by Ciara O’Keeffe and Denis Kinsella who both put in solid performances. Extremely difficult to pick man of the match however man of steel Conor Dermody edges it today. Simple impassible and gave great supply from the back. It was nice to see a full bench today with Aaron Fewer and Matthew Morahan and Stephen Foran getting in on the action and all playing very well. A nice confidence booster and well deserved after all the hard work put in on the training ground. Well done everyone

Youths Result: Carrick Utd 3 vs Mooncoin Celtic 0

We started very well against the champions elect and had a couple of half chances before Carrick started to get into it. A good free kick put Carrick 1 up but again Mooncoin pressed and were unlucky not to level when a ball flew across the Carrick goal line and just missed Evan Clearys toe (a bad miss). 2nd half was tit for tat throughout. Liam Quinn mistimed a tackle & Carrick won a peno to make it 2-0. Again we pressed and Jack Conway taught he had scored only to be ruled offside, with 5 minutes left Carrick wrapped it up and deservedly clinched a competitive league. Congratulations to Carrick Utd players and coaches.

U12 Girls Result Mooncoin Celtic 3 vs Dungarvan Utd 3

What a great game and finally Mooncoin got a result that they deserve. The girls can actually feel disappointed that they didn’t come away with all three points against a very good Dungarvan team who had lost only one match so far and who have a number of girls on the Waterford Development squad. We were more than a match for them in the mud of Ashgrove.

Aoibhe Rees deserves the plaudits for 3 excellent goals, which were the culmination of a lot of hard work from defense, through midfield and into attack. Ella Brennan and Saoirse Corcoran covered every blade of grass (that was left) in the middle of the pitch. Changing the defense in full at half time worked very well. All of the defenders in both halves battled hard against a very talented Dungarvan team.

There were long periods of the game where we dominated Dungarvan and were unlucky not to score considerably more. The Dungarvan midfield and attack was never given a minute to settle on the ball, and they would probably agree that there was more than an element of luck about some of their goals.

Every girl deserves to get a mention as they all performed fantastically well out there.
It is sometimes hard to believe that this is the first year of the Mooncoin Girls’ u12 team. We have a very special group of girls here who have improved some much in such a short time. The quality of the training sessions has been excellent in recent weeks and the girls are really progressing. We are looking forward to the next game in two weeks time.

4th Division Result Mooncoin Celtic 1 Dunmore 1

A right old battle took place in soft conditions in Ashgrove this morning with every ball scrapped for throughout. Dunmore were full value for their 1-0 lead but the boys kept prodding away and eventually the pressure paid off with Chucky Norris rifling home a penalty to bring them level. The second half was 50//50 with very little between the teams and the 1-1 draw was probably a fair result.
