U11b Boys: Ballinroad 0 – 1 Mooncoin Celtic

Ballinroad started the week a point ahead of us in the table so our penultimate league game was a battle for 5th place.

Killian led the boys out for this one and started the game up front with Kevin.

Mooncoin sat deep at the beginning as the home team pushed forward and a failure to clear our lines resulted in a handball in the box and a penalty to Ballinroad.

The penalty taker struck the ball to the left but Fionn was equal to it and saved brilliantly to deny an opening goal.

A loose header moments later created a clear chance for the seasiders but again Fionn wasn’t to be beaten pushing the ball around the post for a corner.

Moments later however the boys in white went ahead when Killian played a lovely through ball to his strike partner Kevin.

Anyone could be forgiven for thinking the young forward took the ball too far wide until the coolest man on the pitch nonchalantly rolled it past their keeper into the bottom corner before wheeling away in celebration with his teammates.

Mooncoin pressed forward for the remainder of the half with Killian in particular pressing high up the pitch to ensure the Ballinroad defenders had no time on the ball.

Aaron in particular was unlucky with a shot from distance which went just wide of the upright.

The second half began with Cian causing trouble with his pace and Ethan who played some intelligent passes to hold up the ball.

Eoin on the right wing ran his socks off for the cause as did Aaron and Tom in midfield. Tadhg read the game very well with some excellent interceptions and clearances. Sean made one last ditch block to deny a shot from close range. Padraig somehow managed to cover at right back yet break forward at every opportunity.

The last few minutes required fresh legs with James and Charlie crowding out the Ballinroad attack down our left side giving nothing away.

Cian was unlucky not to score at the end as he hit the ball on the spin after great work from Viktor up top. Indeed Cian had his best game of the season and took pressure off his teammates with his running particularly towards the end of the match.

And so the game finished at 1-0 to the visitors. All of the boys can take great heart from this performance going into our last league match away to Villa having now won two from their last four games.

Thanks again to our sponsors at Dragonz Den.

U11d Boys: Waterford Crystal 0 – 4 Mooncoin Celtic

A chilly but yet lovely sunny evening for football saw the young U11 team travel to Crystal Park for a cracker of a match against Waterford Crystal.

The break through goal was by Billy O’Keeffe who choose going to this match instead of staying at home for his Dad’s birthday party, the goal well assisted by Jack Twomey.

Tyler Kelly saved a penalty at 1-0 up and then the 2nd goal came through Noel Doyle assisted by Jonathan Rowe.

The 3rd goal was another fine one from Ryan Sutton and Noel Doyle capped off a fine display with the teams 4th goal, his second of the match.

The team were strong from start to finish, and played some great football throughout the match.

Last Man Standing Update

The weekend gone saw 2 unlucky fallers thanks to Brighton and Leicester only drawing their respective games. The final 8 entries will have a tough job this week with the majority of top teams selected by all already. Best of luck to the remaining 8 in the hunt for €1000.

Adult Teams 2021-2022 League Review

Our 2 adult teams completed their league campaigns today with victory away to Ballinroad for our 1B team and a 3-2 win away for our 3rd division side.

After a long season which started back last July, today saw an end to a full league programme for both our teams and we will give a quick review on both squads as we pushed our schoolboys and schoolgirls reports on social media all season and held back our reports on our adult teams.

Mooncoin Celtic 3rd Division 2021-2022 League Review

In June 2021 this large group assembled hoping to make an impression in the 3rd division league with a mix of young and old involved. After a decent start where they went 8 games unbeaten before coming unstuck against a quality Carrick United team who eventually went on to win the league comfortably.

After the heavy 5-0 defeat back in October, the lads regrouped and strung a couple of wins together before falling flat against Waterford Crystal in another 5-0 loss to put paid to any lingering hopes of league glory.

A lot of positives for a new group of players but ultimately 1st is 1st and 2nd is nowhere. Congratulations to a very talented Carrick United squad on winning the League very comfortably.

Mooncoin Celtic 1B 2021-2022 League Review

Our young 1B squad took the brave step up to the 1B League from the 2b League and took a few games to get accustomed to the higher level and did not disappoint overall.

Led by John Ryan and Patrick Dobbyn, this squad with an average age of just 21 were in a strong league with Tramore, Villa and Kilmacthomas leading the charge and the remaining clubs doing their best to keep pace with our young guns doing their utmost to make an impression. Results picked after a tricky start and the addition of Tim Treacy from Carrick United and Aidan Holden from Waterford Crystal brought more quality to a young squad which eventually finished 4th in a very tight league.

Congratulations must go to a quality Tramore team who steamrolled the league and deservedly lifted the league trophy. The future of this squad is very bright and all going well silverware is not too far away in the coming years.

WU17 SFAI Cup: Gorey Rangers 3 – 1 Mooncoin Celtic

Road trip was on the cards Yesterday as the u17 Girls made their way to Gorey Rangers for the FAI Cup .

We set off from Mooncoin , unsure of what the day would bring , but excited about the unknown all the same .

Gorey Rangers welcomed us with open arms, and there was talking and plenty of Banter . But when 4pm came …. both teams took to their sides of the pitch , it was down to business.

The game took off at a fast and furious pace . And both teams tried to settle quickly. Gorey Rangers drew first blood and went one up after a long range effort beat our Keeper to put them one up.

Mooncoin kicked into action straight away and had some very good passages of play ,,,,,, which was soon to pay off , a clearance of a ball by Casey Moore up the wing to lighting Fast Luiseach O Donohue put us on the Run , Luiseach took the ball all the way to the corner flag and when it seemed she had no where to go, rounded the Gorey defender and slipped a pass to Emily Blackmore , she brought the ball towards the goal and when the opportunity arose , struck home to level the game up.

Niamh Reddy gave possibly her best performance to date in a Mooncoin jersey, clearing ball and breaking down down the Gorey threat .

Ciara O Keeffe, Kate McGrath, and Cayla Dunphy stood firm in the defence . And Grace O’Toole was ever ready and waiting to spring into action.

Sophie Scahill settled into her midfield roll and helped to distribute plenty of ball .

Ella Brennan caused her usual havoc when we introduced some fresh legs midway through the half . Molly O’Doherty and Eibhlin Holden also freshened up the squad .

Gorey Rangers managed to go one up again from a free kick which is the way it stayed until the break.

We chatted at half time and the girls took to the pitch in the second half hoping to ding an equaliser. With disaster striking for us 5 minutes in when Gorey stuck home for the third time .

Instead of heads dropping …. the 40 remaining minutes were filled with end to end football by both teams, Mooncoin banded together, dug their heels in and went all out . Aoidhin Lonergan mixed things up in the middle when she made her way on to the field of play .

And it looked that the tide might be changing when we were awarded an indirect free kick , but some great defending by Gorey Rangers scuppered that chance .

Alanah Jordan gave us hope when she put a ball though for Emily , but the Gorey keeper was quick off her line .
Ciara Corcoran and Molly Long worked tirelessly to get as much ball forward as possible.
Final Result
Gorey 3-1 Mooncoin

Special mention has to be given to Ella Bailey, who stood between the sticks and wore the GoalKeeper jersey yesterday. Ella worked her socks off and put in an amazing shift for her club yesterday .

U14b Boys Mooncoin Celtic 1- 1 Villa FC

Today we welcomed title chasing Villa to Suir Crescent for an early kick off.

We wanted to get back to winning ways and we started brightly today and got the breakthrough early with a good passing move, that Josh McLoughlin calmly finished past the Keeper, how it was only 1-0 at halftime was baffling with the number of chances created.

Villa started strong at the start of the 2nd half, we introduced Sean O’Donoghue early in the 2nd half and he added a spark back to the team, taking on the Villa left back everytime he got the ball.

Credit to the Villa Keeper he kept them in it and it should have been a comfortable win with such a good performance but unfortunately a poor penalty decision in the dying minutes cost the lads 3 points.

Even after that we hit the crossbar with a thunderous shoot from Lucas Delahunty.

All the lads were devestated afterwards in the dressing room, but we told them to hold their heads up and on to the next one. Lots of good performances, but MoM in this one was U13 player Daniel Ponce de Leon who led with a super workrate all day.

U12b Boys Kilmacow 2 – 2 Mooncoin Celtic

A short trip to Kilmacow this morning for Mooncoin U12 boys.

A few chances for both sides before Robbie hit an unbelievable volley into the back of the net from 30 yards out that was unstoppable (shame we didn’t video it!).

Just over 5 minutes later Kilmacow got an equaliser into the corner of the net. A mistake on the half way line just before half time led to a breakaway and another goal for Kilmacow.

The boys came out at half time and deservedly got an equaliser. Ethan hit the ball over the keeper and it hit the post and in the scramble Kilmacow defenders knocked the ball over the line.

An exciting finish for the last twenty mins saw two evenly balanced teams trying to get the three points.

Match finished up 2-2.
