Girls team in Waterford New & Star
Our girls teams got some nice coverage in this week’s News and Star. Big thanks to Eamon Russell for the great promotion of the local girl’s league.
Mooncoin Celtic 0 Bohs 9 Some other score
Storm Erik fired orange weather alerts left, right and centre this weekend but in truth the eye of the storm was in Mooncoin Saturday afternoon.
Matter not the score, Bohs had a good win in truth, nor the weather, it rained hard in the second half, this was still a delightful football event were two sets of girls played out an eventful match were guile, skill and goals were a plenty.
The first 10 minutes of this match was an even affair, Bohs peppered the goal but Mooncoin stood strong. Then a sudden through ball and Bohs were 1 up. In fact this was the theme for much of the match, with even enough play through out the field but Bohs had the cleverness to get their chances into the back of the net were it counted.
But this Mooncoin team are learning and have a never say die attitude which was clear to see till the final whistle. The score doesn’t matter the girls are having fun and for now the coaches will just plan for next fun training session.
Youths result Mooncoin 2 Villa 0
Back to action today for our first encounter in the league with Villa this season. The lads were buzzing from the kick off and bossed the opening period with great authority. Dan Fewer and Lee Tracey were causing serious trouble to the visiting defence and we took the lead after 15 minutes when Dan beat the full back and pulled a great ball back towards the middle of the box and a retreating defender buried a header past his own keeper.
We continued to dominate the exchanges in all areas of the pitch and forced several free kicks in threathening positions. After being close with a few of these free kicks into the box the second goal came from another free from 30 yards when Dylan clipped it over the wall and left the keeper scrambling across his goal line only to see the ball evade his efforts .
Second half saw the visitors assert prolonged periods of dominance without really creating chances to reduce the lead. We lost a few players to injuries before the hour mark and massive credit to the lads for digging deep to turn in a superb last half hour .The defending was top class and the midfield created several breakaway chances that saw us a bit unlucky not to extend the lead due to some outstanding saves from the Villa keeper.
This was by far the best performance of the season by this squad with a lot of sore bodies after their hard work and efforts over the 90 minutes.
Big thanks to all who came along to support the lads in bitterly cold conditions 👍🏻
U10 Girls play Park Rangers
U10 Girls played Park Rangers in picturesque Faithlegg this afternoon and put in their best performance of the season. Short a lot of girls we had the minimum seven girls and by God did they perform.
Themselves and Park Rangers put on a superb hours entertainment with goals, saves, tackles and most of all smiles galore. Park Rangers held the upper hand on the scoreline by 4-2 but this was a close run game. Anna Reddy and an absolute cracker from Saoirse Dunphy were our goalscorers. Very proud coaches afterwards who couldn’t hide their delight for the girls. Training continues Wednesday at 6 in Carrigeen Astro Turf.
WSFL Under 14C League Mooncoin Celtic 2 vs Park Rangers 1
Cracking game in Ashgrove this afternoon. Our visitors Park Rangers came much improved since we played them last and gave us a hard game from the start. We had the better chances early on and maybe should have had a few goals but it didn’t happen that way. We had 11 players today due to a few injuries but everybody deserves appreciation for their hard efforts. Adam Conway took up his new role again in goal and did very well in communicating with the defenders. Liam Hogan and Ciara O’Keeffe were solid as usual at Centre half. Alex Bailey right back ran all day long and was brilliant in defending and also got himself up the pitch and involved in many attacks. Conor Dermody was breaking through the defence with some very strong runs and was unlucky on many occasions. Eoin O’Callaghan came out on the right wing and out of his comfort zone until he got back in Centre midfield late in second half and made a difference. Lee Freyne played Centre midfield and was at the Centre of everything spraying balls around the pitch. Matthew Morahan played upfront today and he was very effective coming back for the ball and passing it straight away. 0-0 at half time. Emily Blackmore played beside Matthew and she also got very involved in passing the ball out the wing where we were most effective. Park rangers came out stronger in the second half and went 1-0 up just after half time. They pressed us very hard up to the last 10 mins. Mike O’Keeffe player very well at left back. We made a change just before the goal which caught us out however we picked up momentum from there and we threw everything we had at them. Eoin O’Callaghan got into 6th gear and he pressed really hard working very well with Alex Bailey after a ball from Tom Conway and Eoin managed to get the ball in the goal to equalise. Park Rangers tried very hard to score a winner but 2 mins into injury time Lee Freyne right from the training ground supplied the killer thru ball for Tom Conway to bury the winner high into the net! Huge celebrations on the sideline !!! Great to see Sam Hartwell and Daniel Roberts there to cheer on the team both having suffered broken bones. Speedy recoveries boys and hope you will be back soon! Well done to all today!
