U11 Blue Squad played Bohs
U11 Blue Squad played Bohs in lovely weather yesterday in the RSC and played out two exciting games with little between the teams. Great advertisement for schoolboy football in the new year.
U14 Girls Result Mooncoin 0 Bohemians 6
An excellent performance by the MCFC girls who gave Bohs a real fight today, particularly in the first half. Bohs were only 1 goal up after 30 minutes and were lucky to be so, considering that Luiseach Donohue had a stonewall penalty turned down by the ref.
Indeed the performances by all of the Mooncoin girls were outstanding. Bohs were put under pressure from the very start and they came up against a resolute defence and the best goalkeeper in the league. Kate McGrath was a revelation at right-back. Katie Phelan also put in a great first half in the middle of the park. Bohs finally managed a second goal immediately before half-time after Mia had pulled off a string of excellent saves.
Bohs managed to gain the upper hand early in the second half but the tackles kept on coming from the Mooncoin girls. We made a number of changes either side of half-time with Leah W , pushing through the middle relentlessly to put us on the attack. A few late goals put an inaccurate gloss on the scoreline, but there were a lot of positives with the girls’ first run out of 2020.
4th Division Result: Mooncoin Celtic 6 Grannagh 0
A derby win at any time is sweet and the lads dished out a happy new year to our near neighbours with a right auld beating. Goalscorers on the day were Ian Synnott, Neville Synnott, Andrew Norris, Brendan Bradley and two from the evergreen Gerry Walsh as the lads went top of the table albeit with more games played than the rest.
3rd division result: Mooncoin Celtic 2 Kilbarry Rangers 1
A quick start from the lads in sticky conditions had them one up after two minutes when Kevin Crowley bundled home from close range after Jamie Moore had an effort saved. Kilbarry to their credit came in to the game and deservedly equalized after sloppy defending. More sloppy defending nearly saw a second from Kilbarry just before half time.
Second half was even enough with both teams cancelling each other out. A couple of changes on the hour mark shook things up and a pin point delivery by Niall Madden was volleyed home by Adam Cunningham to send us towards three points. Overall a stop start performance with Kilbarry Rangers probably deserving a point.
Youths Result: Ballyduff 2 Mooncoin Celtic 4
Goals from Donnacha Hogan, Michael Ryan, a trade mark free kick (heavy deflection included) from Evan Cleary & Kieran Fagan saved the best for last with great finish to put the game beyond Ballyduff in cold conditions.
Man of the match was Donnacha Hogan.
Mooncoin Girls Derby
Some images from our Under Girls derby this morning in Ashgrove. Great fun had by both teams.
3rd Division Result Mooncoin Celtic 3 Seaview Celtic 2
Two down after 15 minutes due to deflected long range effort and a scrappy free kick that wasn’t cleared, it looked like one of those days especially with the opposition talking about it finishing 10-0 and this only 15 minutes in.
But the lads dug in and dominated the next 75 minutes and were very unlucky not to go in at least level at half time but 2-0 it stood to Seaview.
JP Purcell pulled a goal back after good work by Eric Walsh just after the restart. A lovely little passage of play involving Niall Madden, Kevin Crowley and Jamie Moore saw a superb finish from Moore from all of 25 yards to level the game. The chances kept coming and eventually the pressure paid off when another attack starting deep in our own half saw James Blackmore slip Niall Madden in on the over lap to fire home the winner. We weathered the storm to see out the game. Good squad performance by all.
A deserved three points.
Strong in the tackle, 2 goals, and a clean sheet.
There was a large gathering of players from Waterford and Cork for a U15 and U13 girls blitz of football in Carriganore at the weekend and there were 3 representatives from Mooncoin Celtic with Ciara O’Keeffe playing at U15 level and Emily Blackmore, Mia Ponce de Leon playing at the u13 level.
There were not quite halves but 3 sections played in 30 minute stints. Ciara played a good part of the 2nd and 3rd segments, confident on the ball and strong on the tackle. The u15 game ending in a draw.
In the u13 match Emily scored 2 goals in the 3rd stint, the second goal was all about being in the right place at the right time, and no better person than Emily to score that one. Mia played in goal for the 3rd stint and pulled off some good saves, the best being a one on one situation to deny a Cork attacker that was through on goal. Mia kept a clean sheet and Waterford u13 girls ran out winners of their match.
A great showing from all 3 Mooncoin girls and hopefully more to come in 2020.
NOT A WINNER
With the news breaking of the 6.8 million lotto jackpot after been won locally with the winning ticket purchased in Blanchfields, unfortunately it was not the 300 Club Syndicate, much to the dismay of everyone involved.
Congratulations to the lucky punter who did win it and enjoy the spending.
Next time lads, next time!
