Munster Youth Cup Result: Villa 7 Mooncoin 3

The heavens opened just before kick off in Connors park and rained down goals for a highly entertaining 90 mins of football.

The playing surface was of the highest quality and both teams used the greasy surface to great effect .We started the game superbly and pressed the home side back in their own half for the first 10 mins and created a few good chances.

We took the lead on 15 mins when Dan Cleary picked up the ball outside the box and jinked his way through a few tackles before firing a super shot past the Villa keeper.

The pace of the game moved onto a different level after this and the home side gained the upper hand with relentless pressure and scored three before the half hour mark.

In fairness to the lads they kicked back into gear and finished the half the better side and Daniel Fewer Ward went close to getting a couple of goals back in the closing minutes of the half.

The home side made a couple of substitutions at half time and settled into the opening stages of the half better with some great passages of attacking football.

A lapse in concentration left Villa in for a soft 4th goal and a dubious 5 th followed soon after .
Tiring bodies forced a few substitutions and we got back into the game with fresh legs and quick counter attacking football.
Daniel was unlucky again when he hit the post and the rebound fell to Lee Tracey who dodged one defender only to be taken down by the next.
He dusted himself off to rifle the penalty to the roof of the net to make it 5-2…
At this stage the game was flowing at a frantic pace and Villa got in for a few chances only to find Darragh in stubborn form with a few quality saves. We got to within 2 goals of our hosts when Jack Ryan raced onto a loose ball in midfield and split the defence with a great pass for Lee to run onto and take it past the keeper and chip the retreating defenders for a top quality goal.
Unfortunately with our continuous attacking we left ourselves exposed at the back and Villa tapped in two more in the final minutes for a 7-3 victory.
A highly competitive and entertaining game that the lads gave everything they had and I’m sure they will have gained vital experience to help them progress in the league.

U 12 result: Ferrybank B 2 Mooncoin Celtic 3

Since this fixture was announced this squad have been putting in a massive effort in training and it truly payed off. We came into this game missing a couple of key players but it showed the strength this squad has with a few changes at the back the defence was strong and kept Ferrybank to very few chances in the first half.

A great save from Jake Moore seen the ball rebound out to a Ferrybank player and seen us go behind. But not the first time this season we went into the break 1-0 down but the pure determination and desire of this team seen us come running out of the blocks in the second half and we’re well on top with a goal on the horizon. Emily Blackmore came on at half time and put the Ferrybank defence under great pressure with her pace down the wing and it eventually payed off as the ball was deflected into the air and seen Aidan Carroll get his head to the ball and knock it into an empty net to make it 1-1.

We kept pressing Ferrybank while playing some lovely football the second was always on the way. The pure determination and excellent work rate from Aidan who covered every corner of the pitch seen him grab a second to put us in the lead. With Michael Cronin, Patrick Dermody and David O’Shea holding strong at the back there was still very few chances for the home side and we eventually found ourselves in the promising position of being 3-1 up. The ever present and captain for the day Eoin O’Callaghan added to his goal tally for the season and seen him make it 3 goals in 3 games in what was a superb performance from him on the wing.

Ferrybank made it 3-2 late on and put us under a lot of pressure but a few changes to our formation to strengthen up the back seen us hold out and take all 3 points. Great credit to all kids involved yesterday what a superb bunch of kids coach. Team ; Moore, Cronin, O’Shea, Dermody, O’Callaghan (C), Carroll, Croke, Dunphy, Wall. (Subs) Cuddihy, Blackmore, O’Keefe, Byrne, Herron. Scorer : Carroll (2), O’Callaghan.

2B Result: BOHEMIANS FC 1-4 MOONCOIN CELTIC.

It was a bitterly cold night in Wadding park tonight but that did not refrain the Mooncoin march to finish out the first half of the season unbeaten. Bohs played large parts of the first half in possession, constantly looking for a defense splitting pass that unfortunately for them, were knocking on the wrong door.

It was Mooncoin who took the lead, a penalty was awarded and penalty supremo Kipper O’Brien arrowed it into the top left corner of the net. Shortly after it was 2-0, Kelly whipped in a free kick from the right and Kavanagh headed into the far corner of the net and that’s how it stayed until half time. The opening quarter of an hour seen us slow out of the blocks and Bohs got one back with a shot from distance. Defiantly, our togetherness was not shattered, we push and pressed and eventually Synnott gave a ball to Kevin Walsh, he turn onto his preferred right foot, his shot was deflected and looped into the Bohs net. To seal the deal there was a mix up at the back for the home side, the ball fell for Synnott and he slotted it home for a comfortably victory.

Man of the match Johnny Kavanagh work tirelessly from start to finish and was a stand out performance on the night. It has been a very rewarding first half to the season for the squad who have yet to fall behind in a game all season and have picked up 25 out of a possible 27 points .

Well done to all the squad .

Youths result: Kilmacow 1 Mooncoin Celtic 0

A disappointing result with the winning goal coming from a very obvious offside position. We had a couple of good chances in the first half and really should have been ahead at half time. Overall a very good performance with Mooncoin being much the better team in the first half although the boys tired a bit in the second half they deserved at least a point.

Major improvement in this squad the last 2 weeks and will compete for the plate once the league is split. They will also have the divisional cup to play for as well come the end of season. Keep up the good work in training.

2B Result MOONCOIN CELTIC 4-0 DE LA SALLE

In a season that Mooncoin boast the meanest defence in the WJL, the pressure was on today to continue our strong defensive displays. A 19 man squad took to Ashgrove in an attempt to open up a gap at the top of the table. De La Salle started the first 10 minutes on top but without threatening the Mooncoin defence. On the quarter of an hour mark it was 1-0 to the home side, Savauge put a ball into the box, Kipper O’Brien placed an unchallenged header into the corner of the net. Shortly after it was 2-0 Synnott placed it across the box to R. Walsh, his shot was parried away and Kavanagh placed it into the net on the rebound. We were in command thereafter and on 40 minutes a mix up at the back left Wally Walsh clear in on goal who tapped into an empty net.

The second half seen chances rued in abundance from Mooncoin. For long periods of the game our passing was nice to watch and with the introduction of Ryan, Sweeney and O’Keeffe, all made positive impacts and the scoreline could of been a lot more. On 70 minutes Sweeney put a great ball into Kavanagh, his header hit the cross bar and Synnott finished off the move. Impressive 3pts picked up today which moves us 4pts clear at the top.

TEAM:Tebay, McGrath, Savauge, Kelly, C. O’Hanlon, Doyle, R. Walsh, O’Brien, Synnott, K. Walsh, Kavanagh. SUBS: Sweeney, O’Keeffe, Ryan, J. O’Hanlon, Dalton, Moore, É. Walsh. Next fixture away to Bohemians next Saturday night @ 7:00pm.

Under 13C League Result Mooncoin Celtic 4 vs De La Salle 3.

A thrilling encounter in Ashgrove today as this very determined bunch took to the pitch after putting in overtime in training for the last two weeks in search of the first win of the season and proved that never giving up and working hard is the key. We started the strongest and looked like we would have an easy day as Lee Freyne took the defence apart on many occasions and opened the scoring with a great goal with the outside of his boot. We had two big casualties today in Ciara O’Keeffe and Alex Bailey.

We had to play Mike O’Keeffe at right back but he took to it like a duck to water as he had a great game. Captain Adam Conway provided protection for him and there will be a few sore ankles in Waterford tonight as he gave a Mick McCarthey style performance that stopped De La Salle right in their tracks. Liam Hogan slotted in at centre back and brought composure and cleared every single ball. Denis Kinsella at left back was outstanding today and just appeared everywhere along the back line and cleared the ball with every part of his body. Sam Hartwell ran all over the pitch and was involved in linking up much of the attacks and both him and Tom Conway linked up on many occasions to assist the rest to great effect with Sam scoring our second goal. Both were excellent today.

We went in 3-0 up at half time. Brian Dunphy made his first start of the season and duly obliged with a sensational game which saw him notch a goal just before half time. De la Salle got one back before Brian Dunphy made a huge run after a great pass from Tom Conway put him in to score a great goal to make it 4-1. De La Salle scored two goals in quick succession but we held out and didnt panic on the ball and didnt leave De la salle through again. Will Cuddihy came on for Sam Hartwell and got stuck in. In the mix with all this today came a man of the match performance from Conor Dermody who tore De La Salle apart every time he got the ball. He made cracking runs up the line and got stuck into every tackle and was involved in absolutely. Jake Moore was fantastic in goal and pulled off some great saves as he does week in week out Super performance from everybody.

Patrick Dermody and Matthew Morahan didnt were our unused subs but plenty of chances for them to come and celebrated the win with the boys when the whistle blew. Just shows the amount of character and loyalty to each other…. A major loss to our team today and the next few months is Ciara O’Keeffe who suffered an injury during the week. The boys were devastated to hear the news today when they arrived and would like to dedicate today’s win to Ciara… We wish you a speedy recovery and will look forward to her return.
