2017 in review

2017 turned out to be a historic year for the club with a new home back in the village secured for future generations.

The FAI led by John Delaney visited the ground in July and later that month Declan Walsh and sons started work at a wicked pace. Unfortunately the weather stopped the lads in their tracks but come March/April 2018, work will resume and fingers crossed with drainage works complete, we should see grass growing and the new ground taking shape by late summer. This is the biggest development the club has taken on as we enter our 50th year and an exciting year lies ahead with a number of events planned to mark the clubs 50th anniversary and also a big fundraising push to cover the costs of the development works.

We take this opportunity to thank everyone for the good wishes throughout the year and wish all our players, coaches, sponsors, parents of all schoolboy players and supporters a happy new year and hopefully 2018 will be a great year for everyone.

U12 result: Ballyduff 2 Mooncoin Celtic 1

An exellent first half display saw us dominate with the goal coming through eoin o callaghan who scored a cracker to the roof of the net from outside the box but we couldn’t get a second before half time.

We conceded straight after the break and with one or two changes being made due to a couple of knocks this upset the rhythm a bit and we conceded again when pushing in the last 15 minutes. A disappointing result but a good performance again from this ever improving squad.

Our u14 game in Portlaw was cancelled due to frost.

Fixtures for the weekend

Saturday U12 away to Ballyduff, kick off 10.30. Derek Tebays charges will be looking to continue their good run in this one. A brilliant display away to Ferrybank in their last outing will have confidence booming.

U14 away to Portlaw, kick off 12.30.
After doing so well for long periods in the defeat to Kilmacow, Dick and Connie will be looking for a more consistent performance in the paddock against a sticky Portlaw outfit.
Sunday: youths friendly at home to Portlaw, kick off 2pm.
This squad finished the first round of fixtures a few weeks back but have been training away and will be glad of having a game in preparation for when the league splits after Christmas.

Support for all teams is welcome as always.
No academy session this evening but we hold our Christmas blitz on Sunday morning in Carrigeen astro turf with the younger group from 10.30-11.30 and the older guys kicking off at 11.30-12.30.

Match report from September 1990

A match report from September 1990 where our U12 team hammered Rathgormack 6-1. This Rathgormack team contained 2 future professionals with Ritchie Kennedy going on to sign for Crystal Palace and the future Irish international Stephen Hunt also playing but they just couldn’t handle Jack Walsh and co.

U11 Results

U11 Blue squad travelled to Kilmac this morning and played out 2 very entertaining games against the home side in bitterly cold conditions under the comeragh mountains.

U11 Orange squad played Abbeyside and Kilmacow in their home fixture with plenty of goals scored by all 3 clubs. Big thanks to Kilmacow for travelling over and playing at such short notice.

Also a big well done to a bunch of our academy players who are helping out this squad. Giving way physically , they all have bundles of skill and heart and with another 2 years at this age group it will only stand to them in the future. Shout out to the lads for helping out this morning aswell.

WSFL Under 13 result: Mooncoin Celtic 0 vs Kilmacow 1

Football played at its very best in Ashgrove this afternoon. Nothing much between the two sides and a great performance from our under 13 team who get better and better every week to put it up the top of the table Kilmacow. We started out the better team and gave Kilmacow lots of problems.

We made lots of changes all over the park today. Patrick Dermody started in goal today and made some great saves. The back four of Mike O’Keeffe, Liam Hogan, Alex Bailey and Conor Dermody were very impressive and shut out every single attack that Kilmacow made.

Super performance from them. Captain Adam Conway moved to central midfield and had his best performance of the season setting up Lee Freyne for many attacks down the left wing that Kilmacow found hard to keep out. An enormous performance from Eoin O’Callaghan in midfield and Sam Hartwell on the right wing gave us a sting and were unlucky not to breakthrough. Jake Moore played out the pitch today and did superb adding pace to the attack. Kilmacow got the lead 10 minutes from time and knocked on the door a few times but a man of the match performance from Tom Conway who showed up in every department today kept them out.

Unused subs were Matthew Morahan, Will Cuddihy and Aaron Fewer who only didn’t get a shout because of the closeness of the game. Every player is working so hard in training and picking a team is getting harder every week. Good times ahead !! Well done everyone

4th division result: Tramore 3 Mooncoin Celtic 0

We were up against the best team in the league without a doubt. They set the tone from the off and stretched us every chance they got. We had two decent chances in first half ourselves but couldn’t convert. We worked hard throughout but had too much to do and found ourselves 2 nil down at half time. We got all 4 subs on during second half but conceded again after losing Scoby to a hamstring injury. No excuses, we were simply outplayed and bet by a better team. Simple as that.
