4th division cup semi final result: Southend 3 Mooncoin Celtic 1

An early goal from Mick Dwyer after 2 minutes had hopes raised but Southend proved their worth as league champions and got a hold on the game. A golden chance fell Scobys way but the keeper saved. Gerry Walsh had a goal disallowed for offside which would have setting things up nicely but Southends persistence paid off with them forcing an equalizer through an og. Half time gave the lads a chance to recoup but again Southend dominated and wore the lads down to see out the game 3-1. A disappointing result but these older boys should be well proud of their season, more than holding their own in the league and also reaching a cup semi final.

4th division cup semi final preview

Our 4th division team play their cup semi final this evening against league champions Southend. The youths proved on Sunday that this counts for little when they beat Ballinroad. The older boys would love your support Ozier Park this evening for 7pm kick off to spur them on. Please share this post and we get a bit of noise going behind the lads.

U14 result: Ballyduff 0 Mooncoin Celtic 1

As predicted this morning a shock could have been on the cards and low and behold, the boys only went and beat the league leaders in their own back yard. A change in formation by the management mixed things up and everything started very well with Liam Quinn notching what proved to be the winner on 15 minutes. Comfortable throughout, the lads kept Ballyduff at bay with only one chance falling their way and Nathan Long stood firm to keep them out. The boys ran down the clock to secure the 3 points and blow the league race wide open. Confidence will be high going into the cup with the lads more than capable of beating anyone in the league.

Man of the match, young Daragh Murphy

Yesterday was about the youths as a squad but today we hail the man of the match, young Daragh Murphy who stopped Ballinroad with save after save and then produced another save from a penalty in the shoot out.

Daragh is pictured above with his well deserved trophy.

Fixtures for the week

Today: U14 away to Ballyduff, kick off 7.00
A sticky away fixture against the league leaders for Dick and Connie’s squad. On their day, they’ll match the best of teams and have been boosted with the progression of a few u13s so Ballyduff could be in for a shock in this one.

Tomorrow: 4th Division cup semi final
Mooncoin Celtic v Southend, Ozier Park, kick off 7pm.
League champions Southend stand in the way of a cup final appearance for Froggy and JJs team. This will be a tough one but all the pressure will be on Southend who are gunning for the double so here’s hoping the clubs good record in Ozier Park continues.

Thursday: U13 cup away to Bohs, kick off 6.30
Victor’s charges start their cup campaign with a trip to poleberry hoping that a big performance will see them progress. They have shown flashes of what they are capable of so with a little luck a good cup run could be on the cards.

MOONCOIN CELTIC BREAK BALLINROAD HEARTS!

Youth Cup Final Result:
Mooncoin Celtic 0 Ballinroad 0
Mooncoin Celtic win 4-3 on penalties.

After a tension filled 110 minutes of soccer, our Youths showed nerves of steel to snatch the cup and deny Ballinroad the double. An even enough first half with very few chances for either team. The second half saw Ballinroad come into more but could not find a way past the back four of Dylan Harrington, Sean Gannon, Sean Blanchfield and Bill Walsh, and when they did they met an inspired Daragh Murphy on goal who wasn’t going to be beaten. 0-0 on 90 minutes with our lads creating a couple of half chances and with extra time to come, this would test them to the max. Ballinroad threw everything at them but every time Daragh Murphy was there to stop them. And so the dreaded shoot out where Dylan Harrington, Daniel Fewer and James Delahunty stuck their penalties away with ease, a terrific save from Daragh Murphy had given Mooncoin advantage but Ciaran Quiltys miss levelled things up. Ballinroad missed their 5th penalty when the ball whizzed wide and up stepped Martin O’Neill to rifle home the winning penalty. Let the celebrations begin. A few tears of joy were shed with a little bit of sadness aswell, as the man who gathered these boys together last summer was not there to witness it and it was very fitting that Kevin Coneely mentioned Rocky in his winning speech. Massive congratulations to all the players, to the management team and a big thanks to all the supporters and parents for cheering the team on. There will be a few refreshments and finger food for the squad this evening from 6pm in Comerfords. All are welcome to come have a sip from the Cup.
