Ladies League: Mooncoin Celtic 1 – 7 Tramore
A slick Tramore outfit were clinical this evening and punished 4 defensive errors in the first half with good finishes.
Half time saw some serious soul searching for our young side and they put up a much better display in the second half creating lots of chances throughout but only had the one goal to show for it through Caoimhe Power who worked tirelessly throughout the game.
Tramore finished off some of their chances with well taken finishes. Overall a disappointing display by this young group who know themselves that they are much better than the scoreline suggests and we’ll take the positives from the second half in to next week .
Passing of Teresa Conway
The very sad news reached us this evening of the sad passing of Teresa Conway, mother of our schoolboys secretary Brendan and wife of the late Tom Dixie Conway.
As anyone that knows of the history of our club, will know the work the Conway family have done throughout the decades and the great Tom Dixie Conway was one of the key men that kickstarted our underage section back in the 70s, kept it going through the 80s and restarted it with a bang in 1990 off the back of Italia 90 and it continues to thrive today.
As we all know, behind every great man stands an even greater woman and Teresa was certainly that as she was the lady who kept things moving back in the early days for Tom on matchday where jerseys and gear were presented immaculately as well as feeding a bundle of young lads before they left for away matches on a bus and leaving a dozen or more bicycles in the front yard of Conways on the main street.
Teresa would have been the sounding board for Tom for many years as he either celebrated a win or gave out like hell about the days results.
We are sure the stories that will be told in the coming days will raise a lot of laughter and draw many tears.
Teresa was still supporting the club up until recently entering Last Man Standing competitions and getting her envelope for our fortnightly 50 50 draw and she scooped the prize in the 50 50 draw back in March this year.
Teresa will be laid to rest next to Tom on Wednesday morning and the club will form a guard of honour. Anyone that is available, please be at the hall in Mooncoin for 10.30am.
From everyone in Mooncoin Celtic, our sincerest condolences to Teresa’s children Brendan, Declan, Thomas, Michael and Jacqueline, all extended family, neighbours and friends.
Rest in Peace Teresa Conway.
SOCCER MARATHON CANCELLED
Due to the weather forecast for Sunday, we have decided to cancel our Soccer Marathon and end of season awards presentation and reschedule for Saturday 8th July from 4-7.30pm.
Apologies for any inconvenience and we hope to see you all in a fortnight’s time.
Clover Tournament Runners Up
A disappointed U9 side with their Runners up trophies, congratulations to Tramore AFC on their victory.
Ladies Friendly: Mooncoin Celtic 1 – 6 Kilkenny Interleague
A toughened Kilkenny side managed by Frank Begley visited us yesterday for a friendly and it turned out to be a good run out for both sides.
Both sides had chances in the first half with Grace O Toole doing really well on goal for ourselves but it was Kilkenny who took the lead with a long range effort on the stroke of half time. We dug in at the start of the second half and created a few chances before a brilliant passage of play between 6 players saw Ella Brennan finish with a bullet of a shot at the near post.
Some scrappy defending from us and tired legs saw us concede a couple of soft goals and two penalties to see Kilkenny run out winners. Good run out for all 16 girls on duty.
Clover Tournament 2023
We entered 4 teams in the Clover Tournament in Ferrybank yesterday in what was a truly brilliant day with 32 teams entered and over 300 boys and girls having plenty of fun.
3 of our sides exited at the group stage with one side going all the way to final but unfortunately lost 1-0 to Tramore.
Big thank you to Mick Mullowney and his crew for a super day.
A picture taken from yesterday that epitomises what the Clover Tournament and academy soccer is all about. No coaches or parents, just the kids. Mooncoin Celtic academy players and Tramore AFC players chatting before going to battle in their last group game which ended in a 2-2, a real close game.
U16 Girls Cup Semi Final: Mooncoin Celtic 4 – 2 Tramore
Sponsored by Mooncoin Pharmacy
A sunny Sunday morning kickoff in the u16 cup semi final saw Tramore travel to Suir Crescent for a game that was very evenly matched .
On 12 minutes Mooncoin broke the deadlock when Ella Brennan curled a ball from her corner kick that slotted into the back of the net . Tramore equalised two minutes later .
We soon settled into the game again and with some clever through Balls from Emily Blackmore , Aoibhe Rees got her first of the day , followed ten minutes later by her second. The half finished 3-1 .
The second 40 mins was just as action packed as the first , Eimear , Saoirse , Sophie and Molly Murphy did a fantastic job at the back quenching any Tramore attack . Aoibhe Rees completed her hat trick with ten minutes on the clock after a fantastic run in after gathering the ball outside the box .
A cup final awaits the girls after what has been a long season.
U11D Boys Cup: Mooncoin 1 – 6 St Joseph’s
The boys were in the semi final of the cup as they had a battle on their hands against league champions St Joseph’s.
It didn’t start as planned as St Joseph’s scored 10 seconds in to make it 1-0. A few minutes later due to lack of communication in our box they made it 2-0.
Shay Moore brought it back to 2-1 with a free kick but St Joseph’s made it 3-1 right before half time. Second half was 50/50 but St Joseph’s got a couple of soft goals.
Despite the score Oscar O Keefe was on fire in the goal and made plenty saves to try and keep them in the game. Despite the result everyone is proud of the boys and they should be proud of themselves in getting to a semi final and not giving up no matter what the score was.
They did their best until the end. This group have shown great improvements from the start of the season until now and we hope to see them all back again next season.
U12 Girls Cup: Dungarvan United 7 – 2 Mooncoin Celtic
We travelled to league champions Dungarvan United for this cup fixture and a right game was played out. Dungarvan showed why they won the league by knocking in a couple of early goals before our girls settled down and got stuck in with Lexi Walsh pulling a goal back.
Hannah Dobbyn on goal was in top form throughout keeping numerous efforts out. Dungarvan again showed their class by nicking another couple before half time.
Second half saw us assisted by a strong breeze and we used it to good effect with Lexi Walsh pulling another goal back to set us up for a right final quarter but try as they might, we couldn’t get close enough to a very good Dungarvan team and they knocked in 3 goals in the final 10 minutes.
Heartening display by all 10 on duty yesterday, especially with 5 of the girls underage again next season.
Best of luck to Dungarvan United in the semi final.
