Girls u16 SFAI Cup
Our u16 girls had to hit the road again in the Cup after the game was called off last week due to the weather. And an absolute Thriller of a game was played today it would’ve been fitting for Halloween last week.
We travelled up to Kilkenny to play Stoneyford fc at the watershed.
The opening few minutes both teams were checking out the opposition but it was Mooncoin that had the ball in the Stoneyford net with a super goal by Aoibhe Rees on 18 minutes. And as quick as a flash Áine Connery had doubled the score. As the first half continued the girls pushed on and about five minutes before the break Áine bagged her second of the day. Stoneyford pulled one back just before halftime. Second half Stoneyford pushed on and pulled a second one back. Our girls were after squandering a couple of great chances and with 15 minutes left Stoneyford grabbed an equaliser. Both teams were giving it everything at this stage. Luckily for Mooncoin we had the great Áine on hand to grab her hatrick and a fourth for the visitors. We had to endure a hectic few minutes at the end. I think Stoneyford had about 8 corners in the second half. But the character of the Mooncoin girls came through and they got over the line. Final score Stoneyford 3 Mooncoin 4. Our next round is away to Clonmel in 3 weeks time.
U12 Girls SFAI Trophy Lions FC 1 Mooncoin Celtic 0
Another away trip for this group in a SFAI competition and the girls put in a mighty effort throughout and unfortunately came out the wrong end of a very tight game. Good experience for all involved.
U12D League Result St Josephs 3 Mooncoin Celtic 0
The boys travelled this morning to play St Joseph’s in what was a 50/50 game the whole way throughout until the last 10 minutes when we were caught ball chasing twice to cause 2 very soft goals. St Joseph’s were gifted a 3rd when the ball was kicked straight to the striker to tap in the goal right before full time to take the 3 points. Although the result wasn’t good there were plenty positives to take from the first 50 minutes of the game.
Congratulations
A massive well done to U16 player Ella Brennan who starred last Friday evening with the Waterford U16 Development Squad against Carlow in horrendous weather in the SETU Arena. The game ended 3-3.
The Vicky Phelan Campaign and Portrait Exhibition
We are inviting all people in Mooncoin and surrounding areas to attend a special event this Friday, 27th October in Mooncoin Parish Hall for The Vicky Phelan Campaign and Portrait Exhibition.
The event in Mooncoin will be MC’d by Billy Keane and Panel Discussion will be moderated by Tammy Darcy. We also have The Mount Sion Choir singing too. It will be an extra special event as its Vicky’s birthday on the 28th and her anniversary is two weeks later.
The “Vicky Phelan Campaign & Portrait Tour” is a campaign for “awareness” and “change”. This is what Vicky wanted her legacy to be and for the women of Ireland to carry her Baton, to stand up for themselves and fight for change. Following the Cervical Check Scandal, Vicky fought so hard for change in the health services and how women and their families were treated by the State in the aftermath of the scandal. Vickys legacy and her campaign will continue through this tour. It is supported by Vickys family & friends and they are very much part of the Campaign Tour also.
With the Vicky Phelan Campaign & Portrait Tour, we bring together people of all ages to listen to Vickys story and heed her message to everyone as well as hearing from women and men that have been effected by cancer and how the awareness that they all want to create so as Vicky continues to empower people to take control of their own health and to be their own advocates.
Hoping to see you all on Friday.

U16 Girls League Piltown 3 Mooncoin Celtic 1
Today we made the short trip to our neighbours Piltown for our second league match of the season. The game started off evenly and both teams were giving everything. Unfortunately an error by Mooncoin gave our hosts a goal that they didn’t deserve. Piltown buoyed by this pushed on and through some fantastic skill by Piltown they doubled the lead. After the hairdryer treatment from JP and a couple of changes to our formation at halftime our girls took to the field with extra impetus. We pulled a goal back thru a superb Ella Brennan long range free kick that left the goalie no chance. The girls pushed on and went very close towards the end when the ball was pinballed around the Piltown 6 yards box for what felt like an eternity but unfortunately we couldn’t find the net. In the last minute Piltown got a corner kick from which they scored a third goal.
All 15 girls that travelled got a good run out and all gave a good account of themselves. After the game even the Piltown coaches couldn’t understand how the ball didn’t cross the line to make it 2 2. But that’s football for you.
We go again on Sunday next at 11.30am in the SFAI Cup at home in Suir Cresent against Stoneyford. Hopefully these girls can put today’s result behind them and focus on next weekend.
U14 SFAI Trophy Result Killeshin 6 Mooncoin Celtic 4
A cold dry day in Co Laois today saw a hatful of goals scored and to be honest it could have been a lot more with both sides going very close on numerous occasions. We led 2-1 at half time with Briona and Ciara scoring and we went 3-1 up right after half time through Sophie. Killeshin pulled a goal back but we restored our 2 goal advantage with Lexi putting us 4-2 up with 15 minutes left. Killeshin’s two star player’s then clicked in to gear and pegged us back to 4-4 with a minute to go and two goals in injury time saw Killeshin advance. Brilliant performance going forward by both teams, two good goalkeeping displays kept the score to 6-4 in a crazy entertaining game. A very disappointed bunch got back on the bus without the win but can be proud of their efforts. Thanks to Killeshin for after match refreshments and best of luck in the rest of the competition. Please note, the team photo was taken after the game, hence no smiles😞.
Best Wishes
All involved in Mooncoin Celtic wish the very best of luck to Mooncoin Intermediate Camogie and Hurling teams in their County Finals this coming weekend. 🤞 There will be a couple of 🏆🏆 being lifted this weekend.
