Ladies League: Mooncoin Celtic 1 – 7 Dungarvan United

We hosted Munster Junior Cup finalists on Wednesday evening and we’re left with a mountain to climb early on when two very obvious offside calls were ignored.

Dungarvan showed their class throughout the first half and scored two very good goals. Second saw our girls playing for pride and they created many chances throughout with the post and crossbar preventing a couple of goals before Becky Connaughton hung up a good free kick.

A couple of late goals were put away by Dungarvan before time was called.
The very best of luck to Dungarvan United in this Sunday’s Munster Junior Cup Final against Wilton United of Cork.

We’d also like to wish Breska Rovers the best of luck in the Munster Shield Final on Sunday, Breska Rovers beat us in a close encounter in the last 16 in a very close game in Suir Crescent.

Ladies League: Mooncoin Celtic 1 – 2 Park Rangers

A very flat disjointed display saw Park Rangers deservedly scoop all three points on offer this evening. Park Rangers took the lead on 15 minutes when a ball deceived a number of defenders and a cross/shot ended up in the back of the net.

We equalised on the half hour mark when Emily Blackmore tucked away a through ball from Sommer Grant.

Plenty chances came our way but unfortunately no goals. A soft free saw Park Rangers take the lead right on half time. Second half saw a number of chances come and go for both sides but no killer instinct.

Ladies League: Villa 0 – 3 Mooncoin Celtic

Our young side collected all three points on offer this evening against a very young Villa side.

A decent start saw us moving the ball well and we got our reward after a quick free kick by Becky Connaughton set Sommer Grant away and she stuck away her finish well.

Caoimhe Power was causing all sorts of problems with her pace and should have had a goal herself. Villa did create a few chances themselves but Becky Derwin was sharp between the sticks and commanded her area well. Second half saw a more settled performance with a number of opportunities stuck away with Caoimhe Power getting a well deserved goal and Ciara Corcoran got rewarded for her effort with a very good finish.

We saw out the remainder of the game but had a couple of scares with our crossbar being rattled late on. On to Park Rangers at home next week and an opportunity to build momentum.

U16 Girls Cup Final: Bohemians 7 – 1 Mooncoin Celtic

An awful start by the girls had them playing catch up throughout. A very dubious penalty awarded to Bohs in the first minute after what seemed like a 50 50 challenge saw it 1 nil quickly.

A good finish by lightning quick Dungarvan girl Costin on the left wing for Bohs saw a second goal very quickly and we feared for our young side.

But they got a hold on things and Emily Blackmore controlled, turned and finished superbly to leave the Bohs keeper swiping at fresh air to make it 2-1.

Sloppy defending from a corner saw the third for Bohs before a 4th coming up to half time saw the game being put out of their reach and the second half was played at a slow pace with Bohs knocking in a few more.

A disappointing day for our young side but we had decent performances from Sadhbh Kirwan on goal and U14 defender Mollie Murphy the pick of our outfield players.

Ladies League: Mooncoin Celtic 1 – 7 Tramore

A slick Tramore outfit were clinical this evening and punished 4 defensive errors in the first half with good finishes.

Half time saw some serious soul searching for our young side and they put up a much better display in the second half creating lots of chances throughout but only had the one goal to show for it through Caoimhe Power who worked tirelessly throughout the game.

Tramore finished off some of their chances with well taken finishes. Overall a disappointing display by this young group who know themselves that they are much better than the scoreline suggests and we’ll take the positives from the second half in to next week .

Ladies Friendly: Mooncoin Celtic 1 – 6 Kilkenny Interleague

A toughened Kilkenny side managed by Frank Begley visited us yesterday for a friendly and it turned out to be a good run out for both sides.

Both sides had chances in the first half with Grace O Toole doing really well on goal for ourselves but it was Kilkenny who took the lead with a long range effort on the stroke of half time. We dug in at the start of the second half and created a few chances before a brilliant passage of play between 6 players saw Ella Brennan finish with a bullet of a shot at the near post.

Some scrappy defending from us and tired legs saw us concede a couple of soft goals and two penalties to see Kilkenny run out winners. Good run out for all 16 girls on duty.

Clover Tournament 2023

We entered 4 teams in the Clover Tournament in Ferrybank yesterday in what was a truly brilliant day with 32 teams entered and over 300 boys and girls having plenty of fun.

3 of our sides exited at the group stage with one side going all the way to final but unfortunately lost 1-0 to Tramore.

Big thank you to Mick Mullowney and his crew for a super day.

A picture taken from yesterday that epitomises what the Clover Tournament and academy soccer is all about. No coaches or parents, just the kids. Mooncoin Celtic academy players and Tramore AFC players chatting before going to battle in their last group game which ended in a 2-2, a real close game.
